In 1870,Maria Gay Tibau with a small group of women, founded the congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Girona. She took inspiration from Saint Joseph,a model of humble and silent service,protector of the vulnerable. The first mission was clear:to care for the sick ,the poor,elderly, with simplicity,tenderness,and trust in God. The congregation quickly spread through Catolonia and other parts of Spain founding communities,hospitals,and homes for the elderly. They faced difficulties such as wars,political instability, and ainticlerical movements in Spain,but their mission endured thanks their discretion and service spirit. In the 20th centry,the congregation expanded beyond Spain into Latin America,Africa,and Europe,adapting their service to different cultural realities
Maria Gay was born in Spain LLagostera on 24th October 1813, a small town in catalonia, Barcelona.She grew up in modest family and from her youth showed a tender heart for the suffering. her life was by simplicity,compassion,and unshakable faith that translated into concrete service to the weakest in society. She did not to school but she was educated in faith (catechism) by her mother and at her parish,which helped her to develope a strong love for God and church being in service of the sick,poor, elders and those at the end of their life,helping them to have a peaceful death as of Saint Joseph. Her Legacy: Maria Gay Tibau died in 1884,leaving behind a congregation that had already begun to spread beyond Girona. Today, the sisters of Saint Joseph of Girona are present in several countries across Europe,Africa,and Latin America,continuing of loving service to the sick,poor and elderly
